Hartley takes pole at the Nürburgring

Back after a two-meeting absence from Formula Renault 3.5 Series, Tech 1 Racing's Brendon Hartley set the fastest time in qualifying to claim his first pole position of the season. The New Zealander beat teammate Charles Pic to the punch, followed in turn by British driver Oliver Turvey and Malaysia's Fairuz Fauzy.

Group B:
With a lap of 1'47"657, Pons Racing's Marcos Martinez was the first to make a mark on Saturday morning. In the action that followed, Oliver Turvey stole the Spanish driver's thunder with a 1'46"842 lap. One Briton soon replaced another at the top of the time sheet as P1 Motorsport's James Walker dislodged Turvey, before being replaced by Epsilon Euskadi's Chris Van der Drift, who set a time of 1'46"371. Turvey reclaimed his the with a 1'46"176 lap, just before Van de Drift caused the session to be red-flagged, which saw his fastest lap fall by the wayside. Turvey, Walker, KMP Group SG Formula's Guillaume Moreau, P1 Motorsport's Daniil Move, Hartley and Martinez therefore qualified for SuperPole.

Group A:
In Group A, International Draco Racing's Bertrand Baguette and Mofaz Fortec Motorpsort's Fairuz Fauzy got straight down to business, doing battle for top-spot. Fauzy got the upper hand, taking the lead with a lap of 1'46"209. Pic held his own, and eased into second. But with a time of 1'45"804, Comtec Racing's Jon Lancaster put on a show of force to take control of the group. At the very end of the session, Fauzy managed to go one better. His time of 1'45"598 meant the Malaysian driver dominated the session. He finished ahead of Lancaster, Pic, Mofaz Fortec Motorsport's Sten Pentus, Carlin Motorsport's Jaime Alguesuari and Baguette, who completed the line up for the super pole.

SuperPole:
Fifteen minutes of SuperPole gave us the name of the penultimate pole position of the season. Guillaume Moreau set the pace in 1'46"555, ahead of Jon Lancaster and Daniil Move. Fairuz Fauzy was the next to hold provisional pole ahead of James Walker as the drivers entered the closing minutes of the session. Brendon Hartley and Charles Pic next picked up the tempo. In 1'45"581, the New Zealander snuck onto the top of the timesheet ahead of his teammate. Walker took his chance and squeezed in between the two Tech 1 Racing cars. Charles Pic followed his example and snatched second, while third place went to Oliver Turvey. Brendon Hartley thus claims his first pole position in Formula Renault 3.5 Series.
