Relocation successful for burnt-out P1

Relocation successful for burnt-out P1

P1 Motorsport has moved into a new Norwich base after losing its entire Shropham factory due to a fire last week. The roof of the building, located on the Oak Tree business park, was brought down on Thursday night although the outfit is trying as best as possible to concentrate on the job in hand.

Currently third in the Constructors' Championship, P1 has just over a fortnight remaining until the next round of the championship at the Nürburgring. "We have now moved into a couple of offices and a workshop at the Hethel Engineering Centre," explained company Director Roly Vincini.

"We are surrounded by engine tuners and precision engineering companies so it is right up our street. We are still waiting for new race cars to be delivered from Renault and we are trying to negotiate on the price because it is looking likely to be very expensive.

Having lost its race cars in the blaze, which lasted from 7pm on Thursday to 1am on Friday morning, Vincini is looking into a new transporter. "We're also going to see about a new truck," he explained. "I am sure that our old one is salvageable but I doubt, at the moment, if it's roadworthy. I've said to the guys that it is our chance to come back stronger, with better equipment than before, and we'll go to the Nürburgring with new cars aiming to win."

With a grass bank having protected a residential area from the inferno, Vincini is relieved that only company buildings were affected. "It is a miracle nobody was injured," he said. "We went round and watched it go up; if the wind had changed direction it could have taken out a lot of houses.

"We were only in the middle of what would have been our third year there. We were building it up and it was just getting better and better. The fire brigade are going through now, trying to determine what may have started it."
