Moreau wins home race
23 September 2007Fresh from podium success at Donington, Guillaume Moreau bagged his first race win in World Series Formula Renault 3.5 here at Magny-Cours today. After a thrilling battle, Miguel Molina took second place ahead of Julien Jousse. Alvaro Parente finished fourth, and remains top of the overall standings.
With Guillaume Moreau and Julien Jousse starting from the front row of the grid on home soil, today's race had a definite Gallic flavour. The two Frenchmen were quickly jostling for position ahead of the rest of the field, with everyone making it around the Estoril corner without incident. After Moreau and Jousse came Molina, Iaconelli, Van der Garde, Parente, Piccione, Hanley and Valsecchi.
Showing fine form, Piccione made a move on Parente on lap 2. At the front, Moreau put some open track between himself and Jousse, who in turn was well clear of the Pons Racing drivers. Still under pressure from Piccione, Parente afforded himself some breathing space by snatching fifth place from Giedo van der Garde (Victory Engineering).
Following a collision involving Esteban Guerrieri (Fortec Motorsport), Luis Razia (GD Racing) and Filipe Albuquerque (Epsilon Euskadi), the safety car was brought out for one lap. Meanwhile, Milos Pavlovic (Draco Racing) came into the pits and stayed there, his race over.
When racing resumed, Ben Hanley (Prema Powerteam) launched an unstoppable attack on Clivio Piccione. Moreau quickly built up a lead again. Jousse, however, found himself under pressure from Molina, Iaconelli, Parente and Van der Garde. Behind Hanley and Piccione, Alvaro Barba (Draco Racing) took ninth place from Davide Valsecchi (Epsilon Euskadi).
On lap 8, Parente moved up into fourth, while Jousse struggled to keep Molina at bay. Tightly packed together, the Tech 1 Racing and Pons Racing drivers were putting on an exhilarating show for the crowd! All this suited Guillaume Moreau, who was able to open up a lead of more than five seconds over the chasing pack.
At the halfway point, Valsecchi reclaimed ninth spot from Barba. Molina was still waiting to pounce behind Jousse, who did his utmost to cling on to his second place. With three laps to go, the pressure finally told, as Jousse came out of the Estoril corner too wide and the Catalan driver took his opportunity to pass. Jousse then found himself under pressure from Parente. Neither of the two Tech 1 men made any concessions to the other, but the Frenchman was ultimately able to maintain his lead over his illustrious teammate.
Guillaume Moreau said: "This is a dream come true! We missed the boat in qualifying, but I put in a decent performance in the first race in extremely testing conditions. Today I got off to a good start and after that I was in business. I'd like to thank my team, who have supported me all season."
